Nivel Primary Care Database

Project summary

Monitoring of infectious diseases is of the utmost importance for timely observation of infectious diseases to minimize hazards. Nivel (the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research) reports weekly on infectious diseases registered in electronic health records from general practices participating in the Nivel Primary Care Database (Nivel-PCD). From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic this database has been used for monitoring COVID-19 infections diagnosed in primary care. Nivel-PCD was one of the sources on which policy decisions were made. Furthermore, data from all Nivel-PCD domains including general practice, physio- and praticetherapy and dieticians is used for many other policy, societal and scientific goals.

Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability (FAIR) of all of these data sources is required. In the current project the FAIRness of the Nivel Primary Care Database will be improved. We analyzed the FAIRness and, subsequently, we will start to improve the FAIRness by first increasing the findability and accessibility.

FAIR objectives

We aim to increase the Findability and Accessibility of the Nivel-PCD by:

  • Describing the routine care data in Nivel-PCD in machine-readable language in relevant metadata repositories
  • Providing extensive human-readable metadata on the Nivel website (Nivel Primary Care Database | Nivel)
  • FAIRification  of our data request procedure (translation of the procedure into English, enhancing findability)
  • Examining possibilities of a FAIR Data Point to harvest metadata and to improve sustainability of meta-data

Future directions include improving on Interoperability and Reusability by mapping to the OMOP Common Data Model.
