X-omics
Project summary
The project aims to establish a X-omics research infrastructure across the Netherlands. It will combine technologies in the field of genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and data analysis, integration & stewardship.
It is a collaboration between the following parties: Radboudumc, UMC Utrecht, Universiteit Utrecht, Universiteit Leiden, Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum, UMCG, University of Groningen, Erasmus MC, Netherlands Cancer Institute, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Lygature and SURF. It started in September 2018 and will run for 10 years.
With this infrastructure biomedical problems can be solved using an integrated approach, analysing samples using the available omics technologies of the infrastructure.
Social impact
Integrating different types of omics data in the X-omics infrastructure will facilitate the analysis of this data, which will enable us to get answers to research questions such as: What changes molecularly when a person gets sick? What features are shared by patients with a rare disease?
It will also allow us to better understand health and disease and consequences of genetic diversity. How do environmental events affect a population on a molecular level? Knowledge on this can result in new screening tools.
FAIR objectives
Numerous large omics analyses of simple and complex systems have been published in the past, yet the associated data is not always findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR). This lack of harmonisation between instruments greatly hampers the re-use of historical data and causes that omics studies have to be re-run unnecessarily.
The X-omics data infrastructure will be developed based on FAIR principles and design methods to combine different data sources from analytical omics-platforms and other related data, to obtain a comprehensive view of complex systems.
Together with national and European partners we will continue to work towards tools that enable the analysis of data in a FAIR environment. Specifically, to develop tools that for FAIR data generation, storage & analysis, and federated data analysis in a FAIR manner.
