ELIXIR-The Data Infrastructure for Life Sciences

ELIXIR-Europe brings together European bioinformatics resources to support data-driven life science research. This makes it easier for scientists to find and share data, exchange expertise, and agree on best practices.
Resources include databases, software tools, standards and tools for data interoperability, guidelines for data stewardship, courses and training materials, and computational services.

In ELIXIR, 24 European countries work together using a ‘Hub and Nodes’ model. The ELIXIR Hub, based in the UK, coordinates the work across ELIXIR.

The Dutch Node of ELIXIR (ELIXIR-NL) is hosted by Health-RI. The Node is a netwerk of organizations that work together within the member state.
ELIXIR-NL supports Health-RI to deliver solutions on ELSI, FAIR data, en Architecture.

ELIXIR-NL in short

  • Over 50 partners, including all Dutch University Medical Centres, most universities with life science activities, several research institutes, and around 25 life science companies,
  • Over 130 collaborating expert groups,
  • World-leading role in developing, promoting, and implementing the FAIR Data principles (i.e., research data should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable for both humans and computers),
  • Promotion of adequate Research Data Management,
  • Identification of training needs and development of new courses, with themes including FAIR data stewardship, bioinformatics, systems biology, Software & Data Carpentry, and Galaxy (in close collaboration with the Netherlands Bioinformatics and Systems Biology research school ‘BioSB’),
  • Collaboration with other national nodes of European Research Infrastructure, such as BBMRI and EATRIS, and large research infrastructure initiatives.
  • Collaboration with national infrastructures en implementation programs, such as the Thematic Digital Competence Center for Life Sciences and Health (TDCC-LSH).
