Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI)
The Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI) project is enabling access to genomic and related phenotypic and clinical data across Europe. It is doing this by establishing a federated, sustainable, and secure infrastructure to access the data. It builds on the outputs of the Beyond 1 Million Genomes (B1MG) project and is realising the ambition of the 1+Million Genomes (1+MG) initiative.
The €40 million GDI project, coordinated by ELIXIR, is jointly funded by the European Commission under the Digital Europe Programme and through co-funding from participating Member States. In The Netherlands, Health-RI and three Health-RI partner organizations (Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen, Erasmus MC, and the Netherlands Cancer Institute) are also included in the European project.
GDI is an important project for Health-RI as GDI’s ambitions mirror those of H-RI. In GDI the goal is to enable secure access to human genome data and corresponding clinical data across Europe by creating a data infrastructure. H-RI's ambition is on the one hand broader as its targets all health-related data, and on the other hand narrower as it focuses on the Dutch landscape. However, the knowledge created in GDI is of pivotal value for Health-RI, as the project will face similar challenges. Furthermore, it offers Health-RI opportunities to align/ harmonize with the European approach.
The Health-RI infrastructure will connect to the European GDI infrastructure. Health-RI intends to implement GDI in a federated fashion: through the involvement of the omics working group in the Architecture theme of Health-RI, the infrastructure will allow participation from all Health-RI regional nodes.
Since the project touches on almost all aspects of Health-RI, many other themes and activities in Health-RI are also involved, including FAIR DI, ELSI, and Services. Part of the project will also be working from the start on the long-term sustainability of GDI-provided infrastructure.
