Architecture

Health data and the associated context are available for every authorized user within the terms of use

Why Health-RI Architecture?

In healthcare, data is scattered across different domains on separate platforms and difficult to find and access. Moreover, there is a growing demand of researchers and healthcare professionals for re-usable health data to facilitate personalized medicine and a learning healthcare system. Therefore, Health-RI Architecture aims to make health data reusable within an integrated health data infrastructure for research and innovation.

Data holders have a need to make their data available once, in a robust and standardized way, for multiple purposes including research and innovation.

Data users need to be able to

  • Find and interpret health data
  • Obtain responsible and secure access to health data
  • Process and analyze health data
  • Unambiguously return results for reuse

What does Health-RI Architecture do?

  1. Defining and govern architecture agreements together with all stakeholders for the benefit of a integrated health data infrastructure for research and innovation; for all five interoperability levels, beginning with the processes in mind. The user stories form the fundament to define the Policy, Information, Application and Technical layers.
  • Policy; organizational, legal
  • Process; User Stories Data Holder and Data User
  • Information; (in collaboration with FAIR)
  • Application
  • Technical
  1. Preparing and governing a repository of reusable components or building blocks with Services. Facilitate future participants to join the integrated health data infrastructure for research and innovation with a repository of functional components and services that comply with the architecture agreements.

How does Health-RI Architecture do this?

We iteratively define and secure architecture agreements from practice based on existing architecture principles in the participating nodes (e.g. regional hospitals), expanded with new components proven in use cases. Different single point solutions are integrated into a generic solution.

Within Health-RI we have divided architecture into five areas of expertise. Three areas of expertise focus on making different types of data available. We differentiate between (1) Clinical data, (2) Imaging data and (3) Omics data. One area of expertise focuses on the Catalogue/ Portal, aiming to make all types of health data discoverable, interpretable and requestable (4). And one area of expertise focuses on analyzing all types of health data (central and federated) (5).
