Biobank Day 2023

The day featured three engaging sessions:

1. Biomaterials: Experts discussed the latest advancements in biomaterial collection and preservation with a presentation of Peggy Manders (Radboudumc) regarding pre-analytical characteristics of biobank samples used in clinical research and presentation by Alain van Gool (Radboudumc) exploring the lessons learned from omics biomarker studies. The last presentation in the session was by Hilde Brouwers (Erasmus MC) and Paul Mollevanger (Raad voor Accreditatie) discussing the accreditation of biobanks and the ISO norms.

2. Data Handling: Participants explored innovative approaches to manage, store, and analyze biobank data, emphasizing data quality and integrity. The first talk in the session by Roger Snijder (LUMC) discussed the biomaterials information model. The second talk by Trynke de Jong (Lifelines) took a look at the 15 years of the Lifelines Access Model. The last talk of the session was given by Menno de Vries (Princes Maxima Center) on the topic of findability of data via DISQOVER.

3. ELSI and Patient: A thought-provoking session focused on the ethical, legal, and societal aspects of biobanking and patient involvement. The first talk by Ellis Niemantsverdriet (LUMC) focused on how to achieve mutual recognition for the assessment of multicenter biobanking. Then Irith Kist (NKI-AvL) gave a talk about the use of personal data and bodily material.

After the sessions Inge Huitinga presented a profile of the Netherlands Brain Bank. Keynote speaker Miekde de Wilde from BBMRI.be updated the community on ISO20387 accreditation for biobanks, ensuring sample and data quality and safety.

A panel discussion tackled current hot topics in the field, such as technical barriers, biomaterial quality, legal frameworks, funding and more.

The day concluded with a networking event, allowing participants to connect and share insights.
