Work Conference on the EHDS and Businesses

News News

What will change for companies with the arrival of the European Health Data Space (EHDS)?

This question was central last Friday, 28 November, at the well-attended working conference “EHDS and businesses” held at the Health-RI offices. Together with representatives from across the healthcare sector, we explored what this legislation will concretely mean for companies operating in the health and data domain. What legal and technical requirements are coming their way, and how can we ensure that companies, as an essential part of the ecosystem, are properly included in these developments?

After a warm welcome by Joep Rijnierse and Leone Flikweert, who explained the role of Health-RI’s Industry Advisory Committee, Merlijn van Rijswijk gave an inspiring presentation on the impact and opportunities that the EHDS offers for companies.

This was followed by valuable practical perspectives shared by Inez de Greef-van der Sandt (Treeway), Maarten van der Wilt (Performation), Stefan van Aalst (anDREa B.V. (Digital Research Environment)), and Joep Rijnierse (Amgen). These insights formed a good bridge toward the breakout sessions on the different roles companies can play within the EHDS: data holder, data user, and service provider.

During the working conference, participants identified major opportunities for businesses arising from the EHDS:

  • Mandatory data sharing brings data holders and data users closer together, strengthening trust and collaboration.
  • The EHDS can help position the Netherlands more strongly as a research country.
  • The possibility of obtaining real-time data is seen as a major opportunity for innovation.
  • Companies can support data holders in making their data available.

Concerns were also raised, such as: How will the EHDS handle intellectual property? Who bears the costs of an exploratory process, for example if no data request is ultimately submitted? How will we ensure that data quality is up to standard? These topics continued to spark discussion during the networking lunch.
