Despite improvements in current healthcare, the number of patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) continues to rise. It is estimated that the number of people with CVD in the Netherlands will increase by 30% in the next ten years. A new infrastructure is needed to address relevant clinical questions that support clinical decision-making in a fast and cost-effective manner. Modern healthcare, with the digitization of clinical information, provides new opportunities for conducting clinical research. Reusing data from daily clinical practice has become an integral part of CVD research and can expedite the transition from research to practice.
The goal of the HEART4DATA consortium is to create a national and sustainable infrastructure for cardiovascular registration-based research in the Netherlands. This infrastructure will provide a framework for the administrative, ethical, legal, financial, Information Technology (IT), and methodological conditions necessary for registration-based research. A sustainable governance structure is being developed along with a strategy for funding the maintenance of the infrastructure and future research projects beyond the duration of this project. The operational data infrastructure is being developed with national partners and integrated into the Dutch Heart Registration (NHR). Data is enriched with various national data sources. The latest methods for evaluating data quality and data analysis are being developed and implemented in this project. Heart failure (HF) will be the first disease domain of the intended infrastructure. The aim is to create a longitudinal HF registration that provides a comprehensive overview of the diagnosis and treatment of HF in daily practice in the Netherlands. Mirror information is fed back to participating centers. Prospective, randomized intervention research focuses on pharmacotherapeutic dietary supplements for patients with chronic HF.
Heart4Data and Health-RI are currently exploring how they can concretely strengthen each other in various areas, such as legal and 'single capture, multiple use' aspects.
