New to data stewardship in the health domain or time for a refresher? Health-RI organises an in person introductory course to FAIR data stewardship

Health-RI has developed “Connection Principles” to help new parties connect to the Dutch national health data infrastructure. These principles provide guidance on how consortia and initiatives can align with the Health-RI infrastructure, in coordination with regional Health-RI nodes. This initiative was taken in response to the recent NWO-call for Research Infrastructures National Consortia.

From 19–22 May 2026, the Europe Biobank Week will take place at the Prague Congress Centre. This leading international congress brings together researchers, biobank professionals, policymakers, and industry partners to exchange knowledge and best practices in biobanking, data infrastructure, and the future of health data in Europe.

On Thursday, March 19, 2026, the time had finally come again: the Biobank Day, organized by BBMRI.nl in collaboration with Health-RI. This year, we gathered with approximately 150 participants at the Princess Máxima Center in Utrecht.

Health-RI and the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with which they take an important step towards the development of a learning healthcare system in (pediatric) oncology.

In early April, the second edition of Fellowship of the Data took place in Jena, Germany. This community-driven conference, initiated by data stewards and RDM trainers, has grown into an inspiring platform for anyone involved in Research Data Management (RDM).

The second edition of the National Biobank Day organized by Health-RI took place at the Experience Center in Nijmegen on March 27, 2025, bringing together 150 participants from across the Netherlands.

On January 21 and 22, Health-RI hosted the EOSC-ENTRUST Blueprint Validation Workshop, bringing together 31 in-person and 15 online participants from 12 European countries.

Report 2022-2024: TDCC-LSH: Strengthening the Dutch data driven health & life sciences field

Better health for citizens and patients through data reuse with an integrated health data infrastructure. This is certainly not just a technical challenge. In order to achieve this, there must above all be people, such as data stewards, who know how data can be made findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR) safely and responsibly.     

The Essentials 4 Data Support course offers an introduction on beginner level for data professionals and those who support researchers in storing, managing, archiving and sharing their research data.

RDNL course for data professionals supporting researchers in handling privacy-sensitive data  This autumn, Research Data Netherlands (RDNL) organises a course for data professionals who support researchers in dealing with privacy-sensitive data.  

Health-RI's mission is to create an integrated health data infrastructure to ensure better health for citizens and patients. This requires data to be FAIR (Findable Accessible Interoperable Reusable). But where do you start when making data FAIR? Which steps are involved in making data FAIR? What do these steps mean and, more importantly, how do you practically do these steps? 

On October 10, 2024, the ninth edition of the Health-RI conference will take place, again in the Jaarbeurs Utrecht.  

Health-RI is once again providing the opportunity to actively engage in thinking, reading, and writing for the realization of the national health data infrastructure for research, policy, and innovation!

The EU-funded EOSC-ENTRUST project launches today, 1 March 2024, with the aim of enhancing European interoperability for sensitive data access and analysis. Led by ELIXIR and the EUDAT Collaborative Data Infrastructure (CDI), the project brings together partners from 15 European countries and will run for three years, with an EU contribution of €4.2M. 

Health-RI, as host of ELIXIR Netherlands, is pleased to announce participation in ELIXIR-STEERS, a three-year EU funded project launched today with a total budget of €4M.

ELIXIR Europe is the European infrastructure for data-driven life sciences, bringing together 23 countries and over 250 research institutes. The Dutch Node, ELIXIR-NL is hosted by Health-RI and consists of many organizations in the Netherlands. 

On January 26th, Health-RI will start the process of the Request for Information for health data request functions. Suppliers are contacted by email to participate in the Request for Information (RFI).

Health-RI is working on the realisation of the national health data infrastructure for research, policy and innovation. The national healthdata catalogue and portal is the central hub where researchers can find, request and analyse health data.

On 15 November 2023, NWO has launched the first TDCC project call. The call is meant to fund projects that contribute to the digitalisation ambitions of the ‘Thematic Digital Competence Centers’ and the communities they serve. The call is non-competitive and community driven. 

The first Biobank Day, held on November 9th at Amsterdam UMC, attracted more than 170 participants. The event provided a platform for experts and professionals to explore biomaterials, data handling, ethics, legal, and societal issues, and patient-centric biobanking.

Op woensdag 6 september kwamen bij Health-RI in Utrecht patiënt- en burgervertegenwoordigers bijeen met zorg- & kennisinstellingen, bedrijfsleven en overheid.

Met de toezegging in 2021 van EUR 69 miljoen aan Health-RI vanuit het Nationaal Groeifonds en het voorstel van de Europese Commissie in 2022 voor een verordening om te komen tot een European Health Data Space (EHDS) ontstond er momentum voor het realiseren van de ambitie van Health-RI: één nationale gezondheidsdatainfrastructuur voor onderzoek en innovatie.

Een betere gezondheid voor burgers en patiënten door slimmer hergebruik van gezondheidsgegevens. Dat is wat Health-RI wil realiseren. Gegevens over leefstijl, gezondheid en ziekteverloop van miljoenen mensen zijn nu geregistreerd bij honderden organisaties. Denk aan huisartsen, ziekenhuizen en GGD's.

Palga en Health-RI werken samen voor de inrichting van een platform voor het multidisciplinair overleg, met moleculaire en klinische data van patiënten die in een moleculaire tumorboard worden besproken. Het gaat enorme meerwaarde bieden voor de patiëntenzorg én voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek, stellen Aletta Debernardi (directeur Palga) en prof. dr.

Met genoegen kondigt Health-RI de allereerste Nationale Biobanken & Collecties Dag aan, een belangrijk evenement dat is ontworpen voor en door de biobankgemeenschap. Experts van drie nationale initiatieven kwamen op 26 en 27 juni samen tijdens een workshop in Berlijn om te discussiëren over benaderingen, obstakels en kansen bij het opzetten van infrastructuren voor het gebruik van gezondheidsdata voor onderzoek.

Vanaf 26 juni 2023 is de eerste versie van de Starter Kit van het Europese project Genomic Data Infrastructuur (GDI) beschikbaar voor alle geïnteresseerden. Deze Starter Kit bevat meer dan 2.500 synthetische genomische en fenotypische data (kanker, zeldzame ziekten, populatiegenetica) en bestaat uit een set software componenten die gefedereerde data access mogelijk maken.

Donderdag 22 juni jl. presenteerde Health-RI en Cumuluz zich gezamenlijk op het congres “Architectuur in de zorg”, met de boodschap dat zorg en onderzoek & innovatie gezamenlijk dienen op te trekken in de gezondheidsdata infrastructuur voor meervoudig gebruik.

Ministers Micky Adriaansens (Economische Zaken en Klimaat) en Ernst Kuipers (Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport) leiden van zondag 4 tot en met vrijdag 9 juni een handelsmissie in Boston. De data-infrastructuur in de gezondheidszorg is beperkt. Het limiteert onderzoek en innovatie, en dus werkt het een betere en snellere gezondheid en zorg voor burgers en patiënten tegen, aldus Gerrit Meijer (CSO Health-RI). Je hebt namelijk veel data van goede kwaliteit nodig om onderzoek te doen en daarmee praktijkveranderend bewijs te leveren.

Health-RI werkt samen met de ministeries van VWS, EZK, OCW en vele veldpartijen aan de realisatie van een nationale gezondheidsdata infrastructuur voor onderzoek en innovatie. 12 mei a.s. willen we met alle stakeholders, de architectuur/ovt v1.0 bespreken.

Health-RI is aanwezig op het Data Driven Healthcare event in de Jaarbeurs Utrecht op 24 mei a.s. CSO Gerrit Meijer zal hierbij vanuit Health-RI als spreker te zien zijn. Om 11:45 uur gaat Gerrit Meijer met andere bestuurders in gesprek.

Op 29 maart maart ondertekenden verschillende partijen, waaronder Health-RI, een convenant waarin zij afspreken ook op landelijk niveau gaan samenwerken om de transitie naar open science te versnellen.

Lichaamsmaterialen, waaronder bloed of weefsel, wordt samen met medische gegevens uit het zorgdossier opgeslagen in een biobank. Wanneer artsen of onderzoekers materialen uit een biobank nodig hebben, lopen zij tegen verschillende procedures die gelden voor bijvoorbeeld afname of uitgifte. Health-RI heeft als missie om deze biobank procedures te harmoniseren.

Over 50 participants attended the virtual workshop, stemming from various cancer research initiatives, including EOSC4Cancer, CAN.HEAL, UNCAN, and others.  cBioPortal is an open-source web platform used for the interactive exploration of multidimensional cancer genomics data sets.

Health-RI is a Dutch non-profit foundation that services a growing network of organisations in realizing a national health data infrastructure for research and innovation.

Het Obstakel Verwijder Traject biedt nationale oplossingen om (her)gebruik van gezondheidsdata voor zorgevaluatie, kwaliteit, beleid, onderzoek en innovatie te bevorderen.   Op 17 maart kwamen meer dan 75 deelnemers aan het Obstakel Verwijder traject wederom bijeen. Dit keer om de plannen van aanpak voor de komende jaren te bespreken.

An important part of realising any kind of data sharing initiative is making the data FAIR (Findable Accessible Interoperable and Reusable, see also our FAIR data implementation page).

Voor het verzamelen, bewaren en gebruiken van lichaamsmateriaal, beeldmateriaal en medische gegevens is integrale sectorale wet- en regelgeving nodig. Daarnaast moet er een nationaal zeggenschapsregister komen. Dit voorkomt versnippering en administratieve lastendruk.

Beschikbare gegevens over gezondheid en ziekte - kort gezegd: gezondheidsdata - worden momenteel niet optimaal (her)gebruikt ten gunste van burgers en professionals. Als dit wel het geval is, zou dit o.a.

The Netherlands is good at collecting data, but the reuse of health data is still too difficult. That was one of the take aways at the parallel session Improving conditions for a healthy life with health data – from regional initiatives to a national learning curve during the 2022 Health-RI conference. 

What are the building blocks needed to build an integrated health data research infrastructure, accessible for researchers, citizens, and care providers? What solutions already exist in healthcare and in research, and which building blocks need priority?

A learning healthcare system, including the necessary health data infrastructure, cannot be built without the trust, support, and involvement of citizens. Especially patients.  

During the Health RI 2022 conference, one of the afternoon session had as its topic “international data and sample sharing - in the Netherlands, Europe, and beyond". The session was moderated by Egge van der Poel, data scientist and advocate of large-scale data sharing.

On October 6, 2022, the Utrecht Trade Fair (Jaarbeurs) was the stage for the seventh Health-RI conference. The central theme of this meeting was ‘setting data in motion’.

Op 6 oktober jl. vond in de Jaarbeurs het jaarlijkse Health-RI conferentie plaats. Met het thema Setting Data in Motion werd duidelijk dat – na de toekenning van de Groeifonds aanvraag in 2021 – Health-RI het afgelopen jaar niet stil heeft gezeten.

Data-uitwisseling is de sleutel tot hoogwaardig medisch-wetenschappelijk onderzoek, innovatie en optimale zorg. Met dit doel voor ogen werkt stichting Health-RI aan een geïntegreerde zorgdata-infrastructuur. Dankzij een miljoeneninjectie van de overheid heeft Health-RI de nodige financiële armslag.

Wiro Niessen is hoogleraar Biomedische Beeldanalyse aan het Erasmus MC en TU Delft, ondernemer en Chief Technical Officer bij Health-RI. Zijn werk als CTO bij Health-RI kwam voort uit een persoonlijke drijfveer én een noodzaak die hij in zijn werk terugziet.

The formation of three science-wide Digital Competence Centres has started. As a first step, the Governing Board of NWO has agreed to allocate a total of 4.5 million euros for the appointment of network coordinators. They will strengthen data intensive research together with experts and infrastructures within their research domain.

During the Health-RI conference, Vibeke van der Sprong (Deputy Director General of the Danish Health Data Authority) will give an inspiring keynote speech on what we can learn from Denmark in the field of health data infrastructure.

During the plenary program in the morning, we will hear several inspirational speakers who will talk and discuss about the need for – and the steps towards – a sustainable health data infrastructure.

De hoeveelheid data in de zorg groeit exponentieel, maar voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek en innovatie zijn die gegevens moeilijk te traceren. De informatie wordt namelijk niet eenduidig en toegankelijk vastgelegd. Aan die versnippering wil Health-RI een einde maken, zodat zorgdata wel makkelijk te vinden zijn en opnieuw te gebruiken.

Met de herziene Gedragscode zet het veld van gezondheidsonderzoek een belangrijke stap op weg naar een betere, verantwoorde omgang met lichaamsmateriaal en gezondheidsdata in gezondheidsonderzoek. De implementatie van de Code gaat nu van start. Health-RI en COREON werken hierin nauw samen. 

Een nieuw wetsvoorstel geeft patiënten binnenkort mogelijk steviger zeggenschap over lichaamsmateriaal dat in de zorg is afgenomen. Onder die nieuwe wetgeving is in de meeste gevallen actieve geïnformeerde toestemming nodig. Een goede ontwikkeling?

Afgelopen vrijdag 3 juni heeft Nederland haar BNC fiche op de European Health Data Space (EHDS) naar buiten gebracht. Het kabinet zet in dit BNC fiche haar positie tav de verordening uiteen.

Verbetering van zorg, onderzoek en innovatie in Nederland staat of valt met de toegankelijkheid van gezondheidsdata. Voor het veilig kunnen delen en hergebruiken van deze data is een infrastructuur nodig. De coronacrisis heeft laten zien dat toegang tot data nodig is voor snelle innovaties in de gezondheidszorg.

Nederland beschikt over grote hoeveelheden gezondheidsdata. Wat er echter mist is één geïntegreerde data-infrastructuur om die data veilig op te slaan, te combineren, hergebruiken en toegankelijk te maken voor onderzoek en innovatie. Het publiek-private initiatief Health-RI is in het leven geroepen om die data-infrastructuur te ontwikkelen.

Utrecht, 14 april 2022 - Het Nationaal Groeifonds investeert in totaal 325 miljoen euro in het plan van Oncode-PACT om het preklinische ontwikkelproces van kankermedicijnen te versnellen. Dit is zojuist bekend gemaakt tijdens de persconferentie van Jeroen Dijsselbloem, voorzitter van de Commissie van het Nationaal Groeifonds.

De ervaren waarde(creatie) voor zorgverleners, patiënten en burgers vergroten door het benutten van artificiële intelligentie (AI) in gezondheid en zorg, dat was het doel van het VWS-programma Waardevolle AI voor gezondheid. Het programma is opgezet om als vliegwiel zorgprofessionals, innovators en stakeholders te helpen bij AI succesvol en sneller te kunnen implementeren en opschalen.

Helping researchers work with personal data is an important, and often stressful, part of a data supporter’s job. The new RDNL course GDPR 4 Data Support introduces the main concepts of the GDPR and explains the steps that need to be taken to protect the privacy of research participants throughout the research lifecycle.

ABOARD, voluit A Personalized Medicine Approach for Alzheimer’s Disease, is een grootschalig onderzoeksproject dat werkt aan een toekomst met gepersonaliseerde diagnostiek, predictie en preventie van alzheimer.

‘Zorg is mensenwerk’; ‘Zorg is wat gebeurt in de relatie tussen de zorgprofessional en de patiënt of cliënt’; ‘Zorg laat zich niet vangen in nullen en enen. Ieder mens is anders.’ In discussies over de mogelijkheden voor toepassing van AI in de zorg klinken vaak snel verontrustende geluiden zoals de drie citaten hierboven.

Essentials 4 Data Support is THE introductory course for those who (want to) support researchers in managing, sharing, storing and archiving their research data. The course is an ideal start for Data Stewards and Data Managers, but also of interest to researchers and research supporters who want to deepen and broaden their Research Data Management knowledge.

In 2020 we released the iCRF Generator, a tool which facilitates reuse of data definitions to create interoperable case report forms for a variety of electronic data capture tools, thus making it easy for studies to collect data in an interoperable fashion. 

Thanks to a grant from the Heart Foundation: Research and Care Innovation and ZonMw, the HEART4DATA consortium will start in early 2022, in close collaboration with Health-RI. The first projects will focus on heart failure, giving physicians and researchers more insight into the quality of care for this patient group.

On October 7, 2021, Health-RI and BBMRI.nl organised the third and final session of this year’s expert meeting series discussing the next step in making health data available for research.

Zorginstellingen, kennisinstellingen, overheid en bedrijven werken nauw samen aan een landelijke infrastructuur voor gezondheidsdata. De investering vanuit het Nationaal Groeifonds maakt een versnelde ontwikkeling mogelijk.

De Federatie Medisch Specialisten, de Nederlandse Federatie van Universitair Medische Centra (NFU), COREON en Health-RI hebben in een gezamenlijke brief aan Tweede Kamerleden hun zorgen geuit over het wetsvoorstel ‘Wet zeggenschap lichaamsmateriaal’. De belangrijkste zorg is het versnipperd juridisch kader voor het (her)gebruik van lichaamsmateriaal en medische gegevens voor onderzoek.

A working visit by Mona Keijzer, State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate, reinforced the good news on Monday 26 April that Health-RI will receive a subsidy of 69 million euros from the National Growth Fund.

The Dutch government has decided to grant the proposal of Health-RI for a national health data infrastructure. With the investment of 69 million euro’s from the National Growth Fund, Health-RI can quickly take the next steps to make health data more accessible for research and innovation. That is excellent news for health research, health care, the Dutch economy and Dutch citizens.

A collaboration of more than thirty partners launched a personalized medicine approach for Alzheimer’s disease. The project called ABOARD aims to prepare for a future in which Alzheimer’s disease is stopped before dementia has started.

ZonMw has provided a grant to Health-RI to help realize a national health-data infrastructure. This will enable optimal use of health data, samples and images to realize a learning healthcare system, data driven health as well as prevention and will accelerate personalized health.

Er is geen gebrek aan gezondheidsdata, maar beschikbare gezondheidsdata wordt onvoldoende hergebruikt. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek naar het gebruik van zorgdata voor artificiële intelligentie (AI) door CAPgemini Invent. Het rapport onderschrijft de missie van Health-RI om de toegang tot data te faciliteren.

With great sadness we learned that our admired colleague Gert-Jan van Ommen passed away last weekend, Saturday November 7.

ZonMw, the GO FAIR Foundation and Health-RI will kick off a new series of six virtual workshops. More than 80 data stewards and researchers from different institutes will learn to design machine actionable metadata.

Health-RI and the NFU have published a data access policy to support the rapid and efficient secondary use of COVID-19 related data collected by Dutch medical centres in line with applicable laws, regulations and ethical principles.

The first cBioPortal focus meeting took place on September 9th. Several implementations of cBioPortal were showcased which gave an insight into the developments around cBioPortal in the Netherlands.  

The ELSI Servicedesk and the Health-RI Registry in a Box initiative published two interactive flowcharts for researchers in the Netherlands that use patient data or patient tissue. One that helps to choose the right consent procedure and another that helps to find the necessary agreements.

The Dutch health care system is generating much COVID-19 related data.

In de zorg worden op verschillende plekken heel veel data vastgelegd, variërend van lichaamstemperatuur tot laboratoriumbepalingen en gegevens over gezondheid en overlijden. Hoe beter die gegevens beschikbaar zijn voor onderzoek en innovatie, hoe sneller grootschalige gezondheidsproblemen effectief aangepakt en zorgvernieuwingen gerealiseerd kunnen worden.

cBioPortal users and developers are invited to the first Dutch cBioPortal Focus meeting. The online event is organized by Health-RI, DTL and NKI and will be held on September 9th. It will be the first official cBioPortal community meeting and will help cBioPortal users and IT-developers to get the most out of their platform.

It has become easier for scientists working with rare diseases to exchange research data. In a joint effort of researchers from Radboudumc and Amsterdam UMC, a rare disease registry codebook has been created.

A virtual kick-off meeting with 22 signatory countries marked the beginning of B1MG. This project will support the implementation of the ‘1+ Million Genomes’ initiative (1+MG)  ‘Towards access to at least 1 million sequenced genomes in the EU by 2022.

Health-RI launched the Dutch COVID-19 Data Support Programme. To support investigators and health care professionals with tools and services in their search for ways to overcome the pandemic and its health consequences. 

At a sold-out Health-RI conference, the Dutch secretary-general of the Ministry of Health officially launched the Personal Health Train network platform. It marked the official start of the PHT network, a community-effort to advance the analysis of health data from various sources, in a safe, efficient and responsible way.

EATRIS, the European infrastructure for translational medicine, obtained funding for a new flagship project for sustainability and personalised medicine: EATRIS-Plus.

21 November 2019 at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam The theme of this year’s edition is ‘Digital Challenges in Open Science’. A one-day event where academic researchers, industry representatives and policy-makers from various disciplines come together to discuss and share views on the latest developments in eScience.

The information and samples collected in national population screening programs represent a wealth of information and could help scientists discover new diagnostics, treatments and insights in how to prevent disease. The use of this data for these purposes brings about many challenges. Health-RI visited the RIVM Centre for Population Screening to discuss common challenges.

Do all young women diagnosed with breast cancer really need adjuvant cancer treatment such as chemotherapy or hormone therapy after surgery to lower the risk of recurrence? Or would some be better off without it?

MG-NL, the Dutch ‘mirror group’ of the European Million Genomes Initiative made an inventory of available genome sequences in the Netherlands. A first analysis clearly identified some major obstacles for the use and reuse of genomics data in research. These concern patient consent and linkage of Genome Sequences to relevant clinical data in a privacy preserving manner.

BBMRI.nl, Health-RI and Coreon  wrote a letter to the members of the European Data Protection Board warning that the requirement to comply fully with the GDPR would significantly hinder research collaborations.

Looking into the aging brain with MRI could improve the diagnosis of very early stage dementia, allowing doctors to give patients the appropriate medication and offer them greater certainty about their long-term prognosis. Initial research results in the area look promising.

Most of the clinical guidelines designed to help doctors recommend suitable treatments for their patients are based on ‘average’ results and side effects, not on the individual patient in front of them.
